Out of your league? Study shows most online daters seek significantly more desirable mates even though the chances of getting a response are lower. Researchers at the University of Michigan and the Santa Fe Institute showed that leagues do emerge in online dating networks, in the form of a hierarchy of desirability. The researchers applied the algorithm to anonymized data from users of a dating website in four major U.
The study is the first large-scale analysis to focus on hierarchies of desirability in online dating data. Among other things, it reveals how people behave strategically during online courtship by altering the length and number of messages they send to individuals at different levels of desirability.

No one knows yet how public education will be delivered to Michigan’s 1. School leaders in Michigan are offering up tentative new school year plans, mostly to satisfy the concerns of parents, students and teachers on what the school day will be like and what safety measures might be in place as the nation continues to battle COVID The council will provide the COVID Task Force on Education with recommendations on how to safely, equitably and efficiently return to school in the fall, state officials said.
While the governor has not given the green light for schools to make concrete plans for the new school year, that has not stopped many districts from offering proposals that parents, teachers and students can talk about. The state moved to Phase 4 on Monday. Parents say they want information on possible school-day scenarios so they can start preparing for the return to school, just before or after Labor Day. Erin Eagen said her district, Birmingham Public Schools, sent out a survey that impressed her for its scope of questions on what parents need and want for their children come fall.
There is high interest in this, and we are communicating with them. Hill said he has been clear his plan is a set of options that can change based on guidance from county, state and federal health and education officials. Asked why he put out a plan before the guidance was issued, Hill said: “We didn’t feel we had the luxury of time to wait. In fact, the majority of online daters seek out partners who are more desirable than themselves, suggests a new large-scale analysis by University of Michigan researchers published in Science Advances. The majority of people in these dating networks contact prospects who are about 25 percent more desirable than themselves. They also tend to tailor their messaging strategies, sending relatively longer messages to contacts who are further up the hierarchy.
If you are contacted by people who are themselves desirable, then you are presumably more desirable yourself, say the researchers, who are both also external faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. We study the structure of heterosexual dating markets in the United States through an analysis of the interactions of several million users of a large online dating website, applying recently developed network analysis methods to the pattern of messages exchanged among users. Our analysis shows that the strongest driver of romantic interaction at the national level is simple geographic proximity, but at the local level, other demographic factors come into play.
We find that dating markets in each city are partitioned into submarkets along lines of age and ethnicity. Sex ratio varies widely between submarkets, with younger submarkets having more men and fewer women than older ones. There is also a noticeable tendency for minorities, especially women, to be younger than the average in older submarkets, and our analysis reveals how this kind of racial stratification arises through the messaging decisions of both men and women.
Our study illustrates how network techniques applied to online interactions can reveal the aggregate effects of individual behavior on social structure.
