Please refresh the page and retry. I n , a reclusive German named Cornelius Gurlitt, who lived between Munich and Salzburg, received a letter from his sister. When the authorities searched his apartment, they discovered an extraordinary cache of art. Mostly, it consisted of unframed works on paper stored in a nondescript plan chest, but there were also paintings, including one by Matisse.
M ore than a year later, the story of the find was broken by the German news magazine Focus, and the international media went wild. I n , having negotiated the return of his art by agreeing to give back anything that had been stolen, Cornelius died. In a mysterious twist, he bequeathed everything to the Museum of Fine Arts Bern, Switzerland , before anything had been restituted. The second instalment was unveiled the next day, at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, Germany.
As they did so, however, it was impossible to avoid the sensation of being sucked into a vortex of complexity and sadness.

I have not found anyone with the Hopwood surname in connection with other persons found in this collection. Without an approximate time period for when the photo was taken, or when Mr. Hopwood may have been born, I will refrain from searching for possible records.

The Cromwell tank, named after the English Civil War leader Oliver Cromwell , was the first tank put into service by the British to combine a dual-purpose gun, high speed from the powerful and reliable Meteor engine, and reasonable armour , in a balanced package. Its design formed the basis of the Comet tank. The Cromwell and Centaur differed in the engine used. While the Centaur had the Liberty engine of the predecessor cruiser tank, the Crusader and the interim A24 Cavalier , the Cromwell had the significantly more powerful Meteor.
Apart from the engine and associated transmission differences, the two tanks were the same and many Centaurs were later fitted with the Meteor to make them Cromwells. The Cromwell first saw action in the Battle of Normandy in June The tank equipped the armoured reconnaissance regiments of the Royal Armoured Corps , within the 7th, 11th and Guards Armoured Divisions.
While the armoured regiments of the latter two divisions were equipped with M4 Shermans , the armoured regiments of the 7th Armoured Division were equipped with Cromwell tanks. The Centaurs were not used in combat except for those fitted with a 95mm howitzer, which were used in support of the Royal Marines during the invasion of Normandy. Development of the Cromwell and Centaur dates to , as the Crusader tank was being readied for service. The General Staff was aware that the Crusader would become obsolete, and in late they set out the specifications for the new tank to replace it.

The term would soon be adopted by American patriots. They fled from your tyranny to a then uncultivated and unhospitable country. They nourished up by your indulgence? They grew by your neglect of them: as soon as you began to care about them, that care was exercised in sending persons to rule over them. They protected by your arms? They have nobly taken up arms in your defense. The people I believe are as truly loyal as any subjects the King has, but a people jealous of their liberties and who will vindicate them, if ever they should be violated.
Ingersoll, having witnessed this exchange, wrote his letter to Governor Thomas Fitch of Connecticut. He later claimed that he was the only man to report the contents of at least one notable speech back to America. Finally, the letter calls for united action by the colonies against the British government. Still only a teenager, Sacagawea was the wife of a French-Canadian fur trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau, who had purchased her from Hidatsa kidnappers the year before.
The Hidatsa had taken Sacagawea from her homeland along the Continental Divide in modern-day southwestern Montana and southeastern Idaho, where she was the daughter of a prominent Shoshone chief. Viewing such captives as little more than slaves, the Hidatsa were happy to sell Sacagawea and another woman to Charbonneau, who used them as laborers, porters, and sexual companions.
